System on Chip, SoC Developments

System on Chip has moved along from the old days, where CPU manufacturers such as Intel and AMD have been moving

devices inside their system architectures such as PCI Express, Ethernet, Audio and Memory interfaces.

Newer generation SoC’s go a little further than this by providing an FPGA device with an integrated ARM processing unit
with 1 to 4 processing cores providing two architectures on one SoC.

These new SoC devices with ARM Cortex A9 processor are interesting, as they allow a guest OS to run within the FPGA on the
ARM processor with their own input/output interfaces, which also has access to the devices on the FPGA via PCI Express.

Arm Cortex A9 provides a wealth of features for safe and secure platforms, including a Memory Management Unit, Trustzone support
and Virtualization.

PikeOS is now available with support for industry leading SoC manufacturers, providing a true Hypervisor Operating System with
TrustZone support, management of all system devices and resources, ensuring a reliable platform for many use cases.

Virtualization Use Case

Virtualization allows the merging of many systems onto one platform managed with the Hypervisor and MMU, where each
system appears to own all of the system resources. This is achieved by running each system in it’s own virtual partition with
time and space partitioning, with device input/output access defined at system design level, instantiated at runtime with PikeOS.

Virtualization reduces weight and cost of systems, allows reuse of existing software with no or minimal programming and
reduction of the end of life issues with many hardware platforms.

Security Use Case

PikeOS supports ARM Trustzone for Secure and Non Secure World implementations on shared buses, devices
and memory spaces.
Additionally, PikeOS is undergoing the requirements needed to meet Common Criteria V3.1, further information
shall be available in 2016.

Safety Use Case

PikeOS is certifiable to a number of safety standards including DO-178C, IEC 61503, IEC 62304, EN50128 and
soon safety certifiable coverage for ISO 26262.
The PikeOS Hypervisor microkernel has been certified to the highest level on real world operational systems.

Combined Security and Safety

There are a number of platforms now requiring security protection from Cyber activities that might cause severe
or life threatening issues across a whole range of industries, security and safety is becoming the norm in Industrial,
Aerospace, Transportation, Medical and Automotive.
